Fujioto

Fujioto 藤乙 @ Tsumago-juku, Nagano We stopped for lunch at Fujioto (藤乙) on 14 November 2025 after completing the Nakasendo Trail from Magome to Tsumago, and it became one of the most memorable meals of our trip. The restaurant has a warm, traditional wooden interior that blends beautifully with the nostalgic Edo-period charm of Tsumago-juku. I ordered the soba noodles with 五平餅 (Gohei-mochi) — light, flavourful, and comforting after the long walk. My companion had the beef steak set meal, and the experience became even more special thanks to the owner. When introducing the dishes, he personally came to help cook the steak, making sure it was prepared just right. He was friendly, amusing, and full of warmth, and we truly loved his hospitality. Another highlight is the restaurant’s beautiful garden view. Every corner of Fujioto is thoughtfully decorated, filled with traditional ornaments and small details that show great care. The garden can be seen directly from the dining area, creating a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere while enjoying the meal. Even during lunchtime, the atmosphere remained calm, and the staff were attentive and polite. The entire experience felt personal and heartwarming. A wonderful place for lunch in Tsumago — delicious food, unforgettable hospitality, and a charming garden view that completes the experience.

We had a very good lunch here while walking from Magome to Nagiso. It’s just off the main walking path and has a lovely, quiet ambiance. We were glad to take our shoes off at the entrance and take our lunch from the dining room with a nice view. Orders are placed and paid for first at the cashier, then you’re escorted to the dining room where tea and water are brought to you. The food was delicious, especially the broth for the hot noodles. The portions were plenty and priced very reasonably. There is a clean restroom as well, with slippers at the entrance to use.

We went into this restaurant on a rainy day to warm up a bit. We tried the hot soba and miso soup. Both were delicious. There was also a staff member who spoke English very well. She and all the other staff were very polite. The restaurant offered a Japanese-style dining experience and the view was wonderful. If I ever pass by again, I'd love to try some of the other dishes. I should also mention that they are baby-friendly. Baby high chairs are available.
